Sustainable bed linen for a more conscious world
We all need to change our consumption habits, and it’s our responsibility as a marketplace to guide our consumers to make better choices. In this article series we will promote brands that have a consciously sustainable approach, and tell you what they do to contribute to a more sustainable life for people and our planet.
Read The Label is one of our brands that does rigorous sustainability work in the development of their products. They make sure that their bed linen are made with respect and care for you, their producers and the environment. The bed linen is made by India’s leading textile pioneers, who were the first in India to be certified for Fairtrade. In this way, they change the lives for thousands of farmers, among other things through fair wages, free health care and investments in health care and agriculture.
The difference between cotton and cotton
Conventionally cultivated cotton uses more pesticides than any other crop in the world. As many as 77 million cotton farmers suffer from skin diseases, cancer and other diseases every year – and in worst case scenario – death.
Read The Label only use GOTS-certified cotton which is the finest organic cotton, the “golden standard”. The cotton is grown completely without dangerous pesticides or GMO seeds, which improves the health of farmers and their families. They do not have to be exposed to toxic chemicals in the field, which also poisons watercourses and crops. Organic cotton reduces greenhouse gases by 46 percent and makes energy savings of 60 percent. By choosing organic cotton from day one, Read The Label is helping thousands of cotton farmers in India to a better life.
Sleep with a good conscience.
The textile industry is one of the world’s dirtiest industries
It’s filled with shortcuts and exploitation. The industry is driving demand for low overheads and high returns, which leads to unsustainable working conditions. In India, the average life expectancy of the cotton farmer is 35 years due to the strong pesticides and deep supplier debts. Long working days, child labor, extremely meager wages and the lack of housing are the reality for many Indian textile workers. This is nothing that Read The Label accepts.
Partnering up with Fairtrade producers
Instead, they have created long-term and transparent partnerships with Fairtrade certified Indian producers. Fairtrade is the only certification with a clear goal to combat poverty and strengthen people’s influence and drive. The bedding is made by adults, who are paid fairly and treated with respect. Working conditions are safe and they prohibit child labor and all forms of discrimination. Fairtrade premiums also go to social, economic and environmental initiatives. For example, the premium is used to invest in children’s education, health care, clean drinking water sources, and agriculture.
We are so proud to sell sustainable bed linen from Read The Label knowing all this, and we want to encourage you all to read the label on products that you buy.
